-I do not know. He was wearing a mask, I could not see his face, just the colour of his hair and eyes.

After such confessions Alva let out another sigh. Her niece was going crazy. Losing her mind over a stupid masquerade. Maybe one of those gallant men in times of dances. Alva knew that Ebellaine was an innocent girl, but not to the point of deluding herself with a masked man she had never seen before in her life.

What the hell was going on in her niece's mind?

Ebellaine was always a young woman full of judgment and it was not by chance that she was chosen to be Mr. Jordan's wife.

-You fell in love with a man whose face is a mystery?

  -He kissed me.

Alva almost fainted at the moment. Her heart seemed to have stopped at such a statement. A kiss was something very serious to have occurred between Ebellaine and a masked man who did not even have a surname or a definite face.

  - You let him kiss you?

-As I said, it was all very fast. I could not stop him from doing it.

At last Ebellaine looked down. Her aunt's questions were already bothering her. Alva looked more like a judge before a court.

  - He said your name?

-No. But he told me something.

  -What?

-That I should not marry Mr. Allen Jordan, and he'll be waiting for me.

-You're not going to do what this stranger asked you to do. -He just might be kidding you.

-Now, I can’t carry on this marriage. - Looked around. Her eyes flashed again. -I met the man I dreamed all these years to get married to.

Outraged, Alva finally shook her head.

-Ebellaine, this kiss can’t mess up your head. You're on a wedding date. It will be in seven days.

  -I can’t aunt! I can’t marry that monster!

Her eyes filled with dread. The date of her marriage caused her many shivers through her body. Allen Jordan looked like a disgusting man to take to the altar.

-If you give up on this marriage, your life will not be the same. The whole society will turn their back on you and your father will die in disgust, my dear.

The young woman looked at her, completely serious.

  Meanwhile...

Allen Jordan rode with a friend. The young man was blond and had blue eyes. The two of them left in the morning for the field. Both mounted on their thoroughbred horses. Often they rode together.

  -Three days to your wedding.

  His friend warned him.

  -There will be no wedding.

Mr. Jordan said more cheerfully. He had woken up smiling at himself and at the walls of his room.

  -Did it really work?

-I know very young Miss Ebellaine’s-type, puts love above all else. -He shook his head, scolding the dreamy, innocent side of his bride. - Poor thing!

-Do you think she was impressed by the kiss?

  -Certainly yes.

He looked at the distant green horizon, while his pair of eyes were so blue.

-Have you ever kissed her before?

-I never felt like it.It would be a waste of time kissing someone like her.

He smoothed the neck of his dark horse.

  -You're a waste of time!

His friend informed him and Allen Jordan stared at the blond boy.

-Do you have any interest in her?

He confronted his friend, seeking the truth. Allen Jordan would not mind if he said yes.

  -I never wanted your wives.

The courteous boy gave a practical, respectful answer. Mr. Jordan frowned and looked ahead. Keeping in mind the charmless face of his bride. Mr. Zemalter Marques should have been completely blind when he selected her to be his wife. Or he did it on purpose.

-I do not consider her mine.

  Chapter VIII

The housekeeper of the Bellames family, Mrs. Alfina, went to Ebellaine's room. Looking at the girl's bed, Alfina realized that her mistress was depressed. She did not seem to want to get up from her bed and face life with emotion and pleasure.

-Your bags are already in the carriage, you need to get up from this bed, get ready and go back to the Jordan's palace to get married tomorrow.

After hearing this, the girl sat up in bed in tears. She held out her right hand so that the housekeeper would take the medicine bottle she still held so she would not commit a big atrocity against her own life.

  - Where did you get this? - She was terrified.

Then Alfina ran to the bed and took the bottle from Ebellaine's hand. Both embraced in despair.

-If I wouldn’t have gotten here in time, you would have had committed suicide.

Alfina murmured, still shielding the young woman with her protective embrace. The housekeeper had a special affection for Ebellaine. She would never want to witness the girl's illness.

-I Don`t want to live anymore...

During the trip to the Palace, Ebellaine was depressed. Her aunt and her father were worried about her. For they realized how depressed and unhappy the girl was. Both imagined that she should have the opposite reaction and smile even at the clouds in the sky.

But none of this happened ...

In the palace, the bride was dressing for the ceremony with the help of several chambermaids. The groom was also dressing up himself with the help of his servants.

Both made no effort to prim themselves.

The bride and groom just combined into one single opinion, they both did not want that marriage in their lives. Not even a joke.

Finally, Ebellaine went to the front of the mirror, with a bouquet of flowers in her hand.

She thought of the kiss between her and the masked man. And how wonderful it would be if the suitor was him. It could be him and not that monster of Mr. Jordan.

  Moments later ...

The church was huge and crowded with guests. Everyone would want to be present at the most anticipated and commented ceremony in the city.

Allen Jordan stood before the altar, awaiting the arrival of the bride. For a moment there was a hint of happiness at the thought that his bride would give up the wedding at the last minute. And everyone there would have one of the biggest frustrations in their lives. While the groom abandoned at the altar would simply chortle and feast on the Jordan's family's biggest embarrassment with friends at a private party.

Yes, he thought just that until the musicians began to play the melody of entrance, as soon as the bride put her feet in the door of the Temple.

The dress had a huge tail, the veil covered her face and she was filled with precious stones.

Alfidelles was thrilled, Alva and Mr. Zemalter looked very happy as they watched the bride walk beside her father on the huge red carpet.

Allen Jordan, seeing his fiancée coming in, could not stand his anger. Immediately he turned his back on everything there, so as not to see his bride approaching.

That scene was a torment to his anger-ridden mind. He wanted to run away and abandon that obnoxious ceremony. He wanted to be a madman, tear his clothes and leave the temple naked, stating that he did not want that marriage, that he did not want to marry Miss Ebellaine or any other girl.

Finally the father gave her to the groom at the altar and went to his place next to his sister Alva. Ebellaine clasped her trembling, icy hand on her fiancé's arm.

At that moment, the young man looked at her from side to side and they proceeded to the vicar who celebrated the marriage with an inner peace.

The peace that was lacking in the grooms' spirits.

At the moment the priest said that the groom could kiss the bride, Mr. Allen Jordan lifted the veil that covered his hated consort's face. She did not stare at him, kept her gaze fixed on the church floor. However, this did not prevent her husband from witnessing a tear flow in his depressed countenance.

Soon he kissed her on the forehead, forced to perform the act before all.

After the ceremony, they were forced to board a wagon adorned with white flowers and wander through the city. Informing the people in the
city that the marriage had really been consummated.

  Until they reached the palace.

The crowd watched them, all euphoric.

Ebellaine struggled to greet them with a smile. Allen Jordan was serious and nodded coolly to the village. All reciprocated with access, smiles and wishes of happiness to the couple.

In the palace there was a huge feast for the guests. An immense table with various types of food, drinks and live music.

Allen Jordan since coming to the party, just drank and drank. He was in a corner of the room, completely alone. The newlywed did not want anyone else's company at the time, and especially his new bride. Allen Jordan turned the glass of wine over his lips as if sipping water. He emptied and filled his cup without respite.

Ebellaine was charged with giving attention to some ladies during the wedding banquet. The young woman should show sympathy all the time, even as her chest bleeds inside her. This was one of the most unlucky days of her life, taking the days of the dead, her mother, and her predecessors.

Alva was in the company of Mr. Zemalter Marques, while seated at the table, alongside several distinguished guests.

-That was the most beautiful wedding I've ever seen in my life. - Alva said, excited about the marriage.

-Your niece is a lovely person! -She came in good taste to the Jordan family.

  She reinforced Mr. Marques.

-Now we wait for their happiness. -Added Alva, still worried about Ebellaine's prosperity. She knew that her niece did not love Mr. Jordan and might never really love him.

Still with the glass of wine in hand, the newlywed could not keep their eyes off his wife. He stared at her as she stood in the hall, talking to some ladies. If he could, he would shoot his mate with his own eyes. He did not smile at all.

At last his blue eyes were wet with angry tears. So that nobody noticed his weakness, he ended up leaving the party without informing his exit to somebody.

The palace was in complete silence.

The party had finished. With hundreds of people at the banquet, there were now only two left in that huge mansion ... just the newlyweds.

Ebellaine walked through the palace, totally lost. She looked for servants and could not find anyone. At last she heard a noise in the main room of the castle and decided to go there to check what was happening on the spot.

Allen Jordan was drunk, sitting on the huge velvet cushions on the floor. Beside him were two empty bottles of champagne, and he held an empty goblet in one hand.

The pieces that made up the costume of his wedding were scattered on the floor.

Right now, he was wearing his white cuffed shirt, unbuttoned on the front, and full of stains on the spilled wine.

He still wore his black pants and his long-barrelled boots were tossed away. The host did not even have patience for his shoes.

Behind the door Ebellaine was still watching him, and she had difficulty speaking.

Not to mention she still carried the heavy wedding dress on her body. The dress rich in precious jewels made her body movements difficult.

-What do you want here? I wish to be alone!

He said as he saw her standing near the door.

  -Where is everyone?

  -They left.

Her eyes widened in the direction of her husband.

  -The servants?

-Did you see any of them hanging around?

  -Who dismissed them?

-The genius! ... Mr. Zemalter Marques.

  -Why did he do it?

Allen Jordan rolled his eyes. -To be alone.

-Why alone? You did not understand, and that made your husband angry again.

What a naive creature, my God!

-For our wedding night. -He laughed mockingly and went on saying seriously. -I do not want any crap on our wedding night! If you want, look for a man who appreciates women of your type! They are content with little!

He lifted the glass to his lips and found that it was empty.

-What do you mean by that?

She still had not understood what her husband wanted to say. Hearing that stupid question, Allen Jordan's cheeks turned red. His anger increased.

-Get out of here! He cried angrily.

But she kept watching him and could not leave her place behind the door.

  - Leave me alone!

He threw the goblet against the wall toward the door.

With this barbarous act, Ebellaine hastily left, quite frightened. The girl ran down the long corridor of the palace and finally reached her room. She locked herself against him and pressed her back against the body of the door, so that her husband could do no harm to her.
